How Much Does a Custom Website Cost in 2026?
Real ranges for real scopes, what actually drives the number up, and the questions that expose a quote you should not accept.

Why quotes vary by an order of magnitude
The same brief can return quotes of two thousand and eighty thousand, and both can be honest. They are describing different work.
The low quote is usually a theme configured with your logo and copy. The high one is custom design, custom development, content strategy, integrations and post-launch support. Neither is wrong, but you need to know which you are buying.
What the ranges actually look like
A template-based small business site: configured theme, your branding, five to ten pages, typically lands between two and eight thousand. This is the right choice when you need presence and credibility rather than a growth channel.
A custom marketing site with original design, a CMS your team can use, and SEO structure built in usually runs fifteen to fifty thousand. This is where most established businesses land.
Ecommerce starts around twenty thousand for a well-executed Shopify build and climbs quickly with custom pricing logic, subscriptions or ERP integration. Custom web applications begin around forty thousand and scale with the complexity of the workflows they replace.
The four things that actually move the number
Integrations. Every external system, CRM, ERP, payment processor, booking platform, adds development and testing time, and the testing usually costs more than the wiring.
Content. If you have final copy and photography ready, you save weeks. If the agency is writing and sourcing it, that is real work priced accordingly. Content is the single most common reason projects run late.
Page templates. Ten pages sharing three templates is a fraction of the work of ten uniquely designed pages. Ask how many distinct templates a quote includes, not how many pages.
Approval process. Two decision-makers and one round of consolidated feedback is a different project from a committee of eight. Agencies price this in, whether or not they say so.
Questions that expose a bad quote
Who owns the code and the accounts? The answer should be you, in writing, from day one. Some agencies retain ownership as leverage and only mention it when you try to leave.
What happens to our existing URLs? A redesign without a redirect map will cost you rankings you already paid for. If this question produces vagueness, that is your answer.
What is explicitly not included? Good quotes state exclusions plainly. Vague quotes turn every gap into a change order.
Can we edit content ourselves after launch? If every text change requires a paid ticket, the cheap build was not cheap.
Budgeting past launch
A website is not a one-time purchase. Hosting, domains, SSL, plugin and dependency updates, security patching and small improvements are ongoing. Budget roughly fifteen to twenty percent of the build cost per year for maintenance.
Skipping it is the most expensive saving available. Sites that go unmaintained for two years usually need rebuilding rather than updating, because the dependency gap has grown past the point where incremental upgrades work.
